We purchased our house in December 2004. We are an Irish-Dutch couple, who both have our own careers, and we enjoy meeting and looking after people. With some experience working in the hospitality sector, we decided to utilize our extensive house. In July 2012, we started our Bed & Breakfast on our completely renovated first floor. Later, our Ground Floor was completely redesigned as a multifunctional space and was ready in 2016. We have also built a gym and sauna space which is available to our guests. The name n29 derives from our address Noorderstraat 29 in Amsterdam.
The front facade of the building is a monument, which means it must be preserved in its original style. We have been unable to establish the exact age of the house as the city archives only provide information from 1906 and our house dates from before this time. Drawings from the local authority show an extension to our property in 1871.
Opposite n29 stands a monument building (the first social housing in Amsterdam) constructed in 1672 for the weaver population, so the front part of the house could have been constructed any time after. It’s probable that the original house was connected at the rear to a larger property on the Prinsengracht and would likely have contained servants quarters and space for a horse and carriage.
